Best player to ever suit up for your team...

Postby Spence » Mon Jan 23, 2006 12:49 am

A lot of former Buckeyes stand out. 5 Heisman trophy winners. The only 2 time Heisman winner. Some outstanding linebackers, runningbacks, db's, d-lineman, O-tackles have played for Ohio State. But one guy stands alone in the distinction of being the best player ever. Jack Tatum. No one hit like Tatum. As a pro, he was the tough guy on a team of tough guys, with the Raiders. I have never seen anyone ever hit like he did.

Jack Tatum was as talented a defensive back as college football has ever seen. Recruited as a running back and moved to the defensive side in his freshman year by assistant coach Lou Holtz, Tatum could cover like a corner and hit like a linebacker.

When everyone puts in a player we will form an all star team.

1. Jack "The Assassin" Tatum
Free Safety, Ohio State '68-'70

The top ones on my list would be Antonio Freeman (WR), Bruce Smith (DE), Carrol Dale (TE), Lee Suggs (RB) and Michael Vick (QB).

I could make a case for any of them but I'd be crazy not to say Michael Vick. No matter what happens in his pro career, he put on his "A" game against everybody. The only game he lost as a starter was the BCS title game against Florida State and he put on a show. The only other one we lost while he was there was at Miami and he sat on the bench for all but one series with an ankle injury.

Bruce Smith (1981-1984) would have to be second - a hall-of-famer in the NFL with 200 sacks and a one-man wrecking crew in college who won the Outland Trophy and was drafted #1 by the Buffalo Bills. But he had some good people around him at both levels.

Carrol Dale (1956-1959) was a stud who won Super Bowl rings with the Packers in the first two super bowls played. He was inducted into the college football hall-of-fame in 1987. In the pros, he had 8,277 receiving yards, and 52 touchdowns as a tight end and wide receiver. He also played defensive end in college. (Those were the good 'old days).

#1: Michael Vick (1999-2000), QB, Virginia Tech

I would have probably went with Bruce Smith, but Michael Vick it is.

We have a Qb and a safety.

I would've said Bruce, too. Vick was great, but Smith was better.

I don't know, something about me just says Vick isn't as good as everyone thinks he is. He has a lot of "Oh my God, can a human being do that?" plays, but he doesn't seem to have the stats that Bruce does.

Just my opinion.

It is hard to compare a QB and an end, but Smith is one of the best players all time.

I think in case their are too many gys at one position we will name two alternates.

My alternates are OT Orlando Pace and LB Chris Speilman. Pace is a Hall of Famer and Speilman would be if he had played for anyone , but Detroit.

Hey fanatic... didn't Antonio Freeman play for Tech?

I loved him at Green Bay. Saw him return that kick in the playoffs his rookie season and watched him as much as possible after that.

Yeah, he got into some trouble in the NFL, but wasn't he great at VT? Could be wrong.

If so... c'mon, you have to vote for him. I mean, jeeze, he won an ESPY!

Didn't realize Jack Tatum went to OSU, when I started playing football, my Dad gave me They Call Me Assassin, he's been one of my favorites ever since.

well, ...fanatic beat me to the QB position, clearly I'd have to say Vince Young, but my boy has gotten enough press lately, so I'll pick someone else. I've got a tie for #1 because I'd be impartial on who to play betweeen Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams at Runningback, (Priest Holms would be up there, but he got injured the last game of his sophomore year, then his junior and senior year he was rehabbing and was kinda forgot about). Eric Metcalf would be up there too, he was a great TB, but an amazing Punt Return guy. I'd have to give a shout out to Jerry Sisemore, one of the greatest O-Lineman, but his was so long ago. Leonard Davis is a Man-Child for Arizona, just a great offensive lineman. Roy Williams at Wide Receiver, his stock will rise a lot more if the Lions stop sucking, or he gets traded.

My #1: Earl Campbell (He never got popped for Drugs)

mountainman

Well, lets see.

In the days gone by category I would have to say Sam Huff. The games between the NY Giants and Cleveland Browns when Huff was an LB for the Giants and Jim Brown was running for the Browns were classic.

Jeff Hostelter won a Super Bowl as a QB and was a very good player for the Mountaineers, but I'll go with Daryl Talley.

This guy was some kind of linebacker. Watched him when we played Oklahoma, in '83 I believe it was, shut down the Sooners triple option attack. He was there to make plays on all three options. Went on to all-pro career with the BIlls.

He was on my list. But we're talking about how they performed in college. Freeman was very, very good in college but I'd hesitate to call him better than Vick.

Re-read my comments on Michael. He was 21-1 as a starter for heaven's sake. He completed nearly 70% of his passes and should have won the Heisman in 1999. That it went to Chris Weinke is a travesty. NOBODY stopped Michael in college. It was Man vs. Boys.

Ok, so far we have:......Offense..............................Defense
.............................QB Michael Vick...............Safety Jack Tatum
.............................RB Earl Campbell............Linebacker Derrick Thomas
.............................WR Tim Brown................Linebacker Daryl Talley

I'll keep updating until we get a team.

Since Matt can't have a favorite team, he can pick any player on any team in CFB.

Like I even need to say it or if there is any debate by rational individuals necessary on this one...

#1 Herschel Walker

#2 Hines Ward
#3 Fran Tarkenton
#4 David Pollack
#5 Garrison Hearst
They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.

See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.

I think our all-star team should run the wishbone. Walker and Campbell at tailback, and possibly Howdy will let us have Mackovicka. Could you imagine Vick running the triple option with these fellas. And I dare anyone to put 9 in the box, we'll just throw it deep to Tim Brown ALL DAY LONG!

If Howdy doesn't give us him, Campbell and Walker will switch off at fullback and tailback, being the good guys that they are.

There can be more then one player per position. Add a couple alternates if you like. After everyones first choice, then we'll fill out the team with alts.

Since my team is Akron I guess I would have to say the best player ever to come from the Zips program has been Jason Taylor of the Miami Dolphins.

Of course Dwight Smith did return two interceptions for TDs in the Super Bowl for the Buccaneers a few years back as well.

I also see a bright future ahead for Charlie Frye as he takes over the QB reigns for the Browns.
