-------------------------------------------------------------
College Football Playoff Committee and working group members reviewed 63 possibilities for change, which included a 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 team Tournament Expansion options; each with "a variety of different scenarios,” and will soon issue a report to the full CFP management committee, which includes the 10 FBS conference commissioners and Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick.
It's obvious what the media wants, as they aren't hesitating to post up.
Try a simple net search, and you'll see every outlet leading on this story, has "CFP Considering Expansion of 16 Teams."
Sure their articles include that the committee is reviewing proposals of 6, 8, 10 and 12, as well. But all the headers are marketing 16.
Rather telling.

Well, well, well.......... what do you know. Those declining TV Ratings we discussed here on the board finally got their attention.
Anyone believe they’ll include the Group of 5 this time??? I don’t. And as far as how many teams they choose to participate, from 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 16, I believe will be determined by which number generates the most Television Networks Dollars.

I sure wish we could just go back to the bowl system and leave the "national championship" out of it.
Just my opinion.

They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.
The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.
See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.

Football TV ratings are as good, or better than ever...
The year before Covid..2019-20
The 392 regular season telecasts on ABC, the Big Ten Network, BTN, CBS, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU, FOX, FS1, NBC and the NFL Network during the 2019 season averaged 1,839,000 viewers per game (a 2% increase from 2018) while reaching more than 145 million unique fans
The 38 postseason bowl games on ABC, CBS, ESPN, ESPN2, FOX and FS1 at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season averaged 5,037,000 viewers per game (a 1% increase from last season) while reaching 90 million unique fans† on television. (The figures do not include the FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl or the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl, both telecast on CBSSN, which is not rated by Nielsen Media.)
ESPN's networks averaged an audience of 5,736,000 viewers for all its bowl games(36 games), up from last year's average of 5,728,000, an increase of 8,000 viewers per game.
The CFP Semifinals averaged 21,487,000 viewers (two games), setting a new high for non-New Year's Day Semifinals and an increase of 8% from last year's final CFP Semifinal audience.
CBS Sports scored the Network's best college football viewership in 29 years, averaging 7,147,000 million viewers, a 25% increase from 2018.
College Football on FOX had its most-watched regular season ever, bringing in an average audience of 3,729,000, representing a 12% increase over 2018.
ESPN's networks increased their audience year-over-year in every category: the regular season, bowl season, the CFP Semifinals, the CFP National Championship and "College GameDay Built by The Home Depot," which delivered its most-watched season since 2015.

I suspect it’s the Post Season Games that is mostly driving this, the Bowls just aren’t what they used to be.

When you put out 40 bowls and teams with losing records can play...well sure...the lesser bowls lose cachet...
It's now a participation trophy..

……….and when the once upon a time Big Bowls, such as The Rose, Sugar, Orange have lower ranked teams oftentimes without Conference Champions because those teams are in the CFP…….. those bowls lose cachet too…..

Which is why they lose many of the key players who opt out for the draft.

Really ?
Six bowl games—the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and Peach Bowl– rotate as hosts for the semifinals. The rotation is set on a three-year cycle with the following pairings: Rose/Sugar, Orange/Cotton, and Fiesta/Peach.

hmm ... we'll see.
I take everything that comes from Yahoo! news with an air of skepticism. [the article citing Yahoo Sports as the source]
They are notorious for leaving key facts out, and inferring what they want to see happen, as evident truth.
Right now, I believe this is just a preliminary proposal. The 12 team model is the first to be fashioned. Now they will discuss. Saying it is the "preferred" blueprint could be rather premature.
That being noted: Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying they would not do something this stupid. I'm just saying they are drafting different proposals, and this 12 team design is the first to be introduced.

Re: 6--8--10--12--16
If the "have nots" think there is a chance they earn more than one bid, ever, they are wrong. All this does is guarantee that Notre Dame has a spot every year and then make is possible to make sure no P5 conference is shut out of the playoffs. Looks like an incredibly political solution to me.

As long as these governing bodies continue to use a “bid” method of selecting teams to fill brackets there will be controversy and cries of unfairness, incorrectness, bias and “We were Robbed!!!”
Simple solution……. Conference Champs verses Conference Champs and for the accounting of the Independents, let them work out a Conference Affiliation, as Notre Dame did with the ACC last season, from year to year with various conferences or permanently while remaining Independent…….. Performance and Results over the course of the regular season are the best way to go. IMHO

I've said that for years. if the money weren't so good the NCAA would do something about it.
