Am I the only who hates to do a resume'

Postby WoVeU » Fri Dec 19, 2008 6:16 pm

This along with interviewing seems to go against everything we are taught by our parents about humility!

It is not that I am bad at it, I was told by the last few places that mine was extremely well done...but I just hate it. (So I'm delaying updating mine right now by reading posts and writing this one!)

I like doing other peoples but not mine!

I need to get more degrees. Curriculum Vitae sounds so much better!

It has been a long time since I have done one. I couldn't even tell you where mine is right now. (we didn't have PC's to keep them like people do now)

The PC is a heck of a tool for any information. And it surely does make doing and retaining a resume easier. I am pretty good about updating yearly, I still dislike doiing it. It is a good tool to take stock of your faculties. A big thing is it can really help point out what you haven't done or only done a little of, which can help you focus on things that wold serve you well to put some time to.

I use the Functional now so I can put bullets on hot items I've done Fault Analysis for and Solved and things I managed and such. The I can work in some designs and things I do at home.

Then I have the old chronological-job and description thing. Some require this but I want them to see my other format first. Because I have always done things outside of my job...and most of my really impressive things.

Hot words (verbs) and applications and systems you've got experience in is important...that is what they scan for!

Hate resumes. Don't like mine or anyone else's. Sadly, they determine whether or not you get the interview which makes it even more difficult to determine what you should/should not include. Some say to start with the bare minimum - no more than 1 page - tease enough and impress enough to get your foot in the door. Others say it makes you look like you're hiding something or haven't done much if you only have a page. Fortunately, I haven't had to send a resume to anyone in quite some time. Knock on wood, I won't have to any time soon.

Just as a thought. I think that a cirriculumn vitae is much easier to write and often tells the reader what they really want to know. I understand how it is traditionally used, but I am not sure tradition gets the job. My suggestion is you look at doing that if you need such information to go to a perspective employer. There are some very good guidelines at this ...yes Yeofoot, the University of Texas does have something to offer other than a football team :D , website.

I use a functional resume. It borrows some things from a CV.
