Best Non-Football College Coach

Postby Dossenator » Mon Oct 30, 2006 2:26 pm

My vote goes to John McDonnell. He is the University of Arknasas Track and Field Coach. Here is his resume...I will let you guys be the judge of it. He is also very humble. He always says that he had nothing to do with the success...that all the credit needs to be given to the student athletes. But come on....look at his numbers. He had to play a role in it.

John McDonnell Resume:

1. 42 NCAA championships since 1984, including 11 cross country, 19 indoor track and 12 outdoor track. Only 24 other NCAA titles in the three sports combined have been won by other schools during that time.
More national championships (42) than any coach in any sport in the history of college athletics. The next highest is 26 by Pat Henry, former LSU and current track coach at Texas A&M.

2. Five national triple crowns, including three in a row (1991-94). Texas-El Paso has won three national triple crowns. No other school has won one. 20 conference triple crowns since 1982, including eight straight between 1987 and 1995.

3. 26-consecutive conference titles in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track combined from 1987-1995.

4. 68 conference championships in the last 73 events Arkansas has entered since 1981-82.

5. 79 conference championships overall since 1974 including 38 in the SWC and 41 in the SEC (in 42 events).

6. 12-consecutive NCAA indoor track championships (1984-1995), the longest string of national titles by any school in any sport in collegiate history.

7. Coached all but three of Arkansas' 178 track All-Americans in school history. Those athletes have earned a combined 635 All-America honors.

8. Every school outdoor and indoor track record is held by a McDonnell recruit.

9. 32-consecutive league cross country championships (1974-2005).

10. Has produced 54 individual national champions.

11. Has coached 23 Olympians spanning three decades and six different Olympic Games, including a gold, silver and bronze medallist.

12. Named district coach of the year 60 times, Conference coach of the year 45 times, and National Coach of the year 30 times.

13. Coached former Razorback Daniel Lincoln to the American record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase is July, 2006.

14. His 1994 indoor track squads won the national championship by the widest margins in the history of the sport.

15. The '94 indoor track team scored the most points (94) in the history of the NCAA event.

16. His 1994 squad scored 223 points at the SEC outdoor meet, a league record.

17. Razorback outdoor track facility named for him.

These are just the highlights. Anyone else have someone they would like to throw up against him. Heck you can even use football coaches if you would like. About 15 years ago they put a sign up on several streets as you enter Fayetteville, Arkansas, that list the number of national championships the track team has....They have to replace them on a yearly basis. Nice problem to have.

I know that Track is not a major sport, and that his numbers are not possible in Football, Baseball, and Basketball. It also helps that you can win 3 titles every year. However, it is still impressive at what he has accomplished as a coach. The track team being so successful has actually helped the major sports on campus. He is sometimes able to recruit a guy that wants to play say football for a big name University. He tells them come to Arkansas and win titles on the track team and you can play football for the Hogs as well. Many, many, players have done this. A few years back most of the secondary were on the track team. They are know playing in the NFL.

I'll go with Thad Matta. He took Xavier to the NCAA tourney and got to the sweet sixteen several times. Now he is at Ohio State where the money matches his talent. He should do really well at Ohio State if his first recruiting class is any indication.
