Coaches Poll...who had OK State as #4 or more

Postby billybud » Mon Dec 05, 2011 2:31 pm

No coach had Alabama ranked lower than #3...

Who had Oklahoma State lower than #3 in Coaches? Those votes separated Alabama from Oklahoma State...

Troy Calhoun (Air Force)...#5

David Cutcliffe (Duke)...#4

Gary Pinkel (Mizzou)...#4

Nick Saban (Bama)....#4

David Shaw (Stanford)...#4

I don't see a pattern here.

Harris Poll is much the same...

All voters had LSU as #1...no voters had Alabama lower than #3...three voters had OK State as #4

For Saban the reasoning is obvious.

Shaw - assuming he understood Stanford was out of the running either way, could preferred the opportunity to face Okie St. himself. This way, plenty of buzz surrounding the Fiesta Bowl, while the NC game is a disappointment to a majority of fans (70 some-odd percent by that ESPN poll). Of course, that's also assuming he was that calculating...

Calhoun's 5th is a little weird, but he's always been open about his rankings and rationale...

For the others, don't know the reasoning but nothing particularly egregious. Nobody had them down to 12th or anything. The Harris Poll, though...

The Harris Poll hurt the Cowboys' chances even more. Three Harris voters (former Notre Dame player Derrick Mayes, former Hawaii coach Bob Wagner and former Iowa sports information director George Wine) voted Oklahoma State No. 6. Wagner could mount a decent defense for his choices, but Mayes and Wine might want to avoid traveling in the state of Oklahoma for a while. Aside from ranking Oklahoma State No. 6, Mayes ranked Oklahoma No. 9 and left Georgia off his ballot entirely. Wine, meanwhile, ranked Houston No. 5. Maybe he thought his ballot was due before the Cougars got thrashed by Southern Miss on Saturday.

I don't see too much of a conspiracy here. I just think their rationale was sub-par :D

Calhoun did move OK State up to #5. He dropped them pretty good after their loss to Iowa State and moved them up every week they won. I read on another board he had them #9 two weeks ago, #7 last week, and moved them up to #5 after they beat OU.

Do you guys think this is realistic scenario?

Bama beats LSU by 3 or less. OSU beats Stanford by 21 or more. Do you think OSU could get the AP title and we'll have a split title? What about LSU in that scenario getting the AP Title?

Who gets robbed?

The game is between #1 an 2..the winner will get the crystal football.

The BCS trophy has to come out of that game. Either LSU or Alabama get that. The AP can do what they want.

As billybud said, the winner of bama/lsu gets the crystal football, but yes, the AP could vote Ok st. #1. That was the whole reason they pulled out of the BCS rankings...they did not want the BCS dictating to them who they could vote #1. This is what happened when USC and LSU shared the title in '03. LSU won the BCS championship, but the AP voted USC #1. So yes strawman, your scenario could happen...unlikely, but possible.

with the BCS in place..the AP is out on its own and has lost prestige to the BCS #! (who most will call the champs).

What about the Grantland Rice Award?

What we do know, is that Alabama will claim a National Championship from this, no matter what. :D

Maybe two this year. One for them and one for the whole SEC.

Won't that make the 34th national championship for the Tide?

The crystal football is about as meaningful as the Heisman popularity contest.
They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.

See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.

I believe last year was the 142nd national championship that Alabama has claimed. I think Ohio State fans think we have been robbed of 136. :)
