CFP Trivia Challenge Question Game 39

Postby Spence » Fri Jun 09, 2006 8:22 pm

From Ktffan,

What team has the most victories over teams that won a major conference championship in the same year? (major conferences are defined as Big Ten, SEC, Big 8 (1928-1995), Southwest, PAC-10 (1916-), ACC (1953-), Big East, Big 12).

Strictly a guess, Notre Dame?

Well, if we have to give the year, I'm not even going to bother; ktffan knows about 860% more about college football history than I do

Many years. Notre Dame's it. I knew this would be guessed, but couldn't you try a few wrong guesses first?

I'll try to kill two birds with one stone here. :D

Here's probably a wrong guess (for ktffan) to your question about the year, Eric.

My guess would be around the 1988-89 season. :?

It doesn't have to do with a single year. Notre Dame has the best record against teams that won a major championship in the year they played them.

Oh, I misread the question. I thought it meant what team beat the most major conference champions in a given year.

I'll submit that question next. :) I was surprised by the answer but it makes sense if you really think about it (and have a sense of history).

The answer to that question would almost have to be an independent. Notre Dame, Miami, or Penn St. I would think would be the answer.

That was exactly my reasoning. For a conference school, you have 3 or 4 OOC games and for an independent, every game is an OOC one.

Somebody had to have beaten four...FSU has beaten three in one year several times...the SEC, BE, and B-12 Champs in 1993...

FSU beat the SEC, B-10, B-12 champs in 1987...

Notre Dame, 1952...under Leahy won four....

I say that's it.

Let me put this up as a topic and we will go from there.
