From Billybud,

The Heisman began in 1935...who was the first player awarded who played defense only?

How about Charles Woodson from the University of Michigan?

MM has it right. I really thought this question would be answered in 12 seconds.

You're not the only one that is sssslllloooowwww around here.

Me I like to think of myself as not slow, but methodical. That sound more dignified, seems I recall one of those girls from Boston College taught me that. :D

According to the site...Woodson was the first defensive player awarded....he was considered a defensive player...not an offensive player who happened to play some defense.

Leon Hart was a two way lineman...not primarily a defensive player...He is listed as a two way lineman in most sources

Although Woodson did play some offense...he was not considered a "two way" player but a defender. I guess I should have have said "primarily defensive" player. Semantics can be important in a quiz.

At least the source site said it right....

"Charles Woodson is the only primarily defensive player to win the award, doing so in 1997. He returned kickoffs and punts during that season as well, and occasionally took plays on offense. "

When Woodson struck his pose, mimicking the figure on the Heisman Trophy, on national TV after scoring a touchdown .... was that touchdown the result of a defensive, offensive or special teams play? I can't recall. :?

Desmond Howard struck the pose. It was on an 80+ punt return against Ohio State. I think Woodson also started to strike the pose after a punt return against Ohio State but it was interupted by teammates.

Don't remind me about Woodson. I hate win those Ohio players travel to TSUN to play ball.
