The 5th Quarter

Postby WoVeU » Sun Oct 09, 2011 7:19 pm

My wife got a movie for us to watch, family time. She didn't know about the football part and didn't know the name Abatte. For those who don't remember Jon Abatte was a linebacker for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Before the 2006 season Jon's brother, Luke, died in a car accident while getting a ride home after Lacrosse practice. (Luke didn't know the kid driving, a friend of a friend.) That season, Jon switched his number from 40 to 5 in honor of his brother. Rather than holding up 4 fingers at the start of the 4th quarter...Jon held up 5 and looked to his parents in the stands who returned the gesture. Well, if you don't recall....it caught on!

The movie is well worth seeing, and is out on DVD. I have never seen a more powerful scene than the closing one!

And the Deacs did OK that year...

And it looks as if something may again be inspiring Wake, they are 4-1 and off to a 3-0 start in the ACC.
Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves.
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

I will have to check this one out.
"A team with something to play for is dangerous, but a team with someone to play for is unstoppable..." Arkansas OL Brey Cook quote following the death of teammate Garrett Uekman (Nov. 2011).
