Tulane-Southern Mississippi

Postby BYUfan1 » Sun Jan 08, 2012 10:55 am

Behind by double figures and without their best player, the Tulane Green Wave forced their game with the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles into overtime before eventually losing 71-66. 9 of the 11 points Southern Miss scored in overtime came on the free throw line. The Green Wave trailed 38-26 a minute into the second half and 52-41 with 10:38 remaining in the game but tied the game on a Tre Drye tip-in with 1:01 to go in regulation. The second half ended in controversy as Ricky Tarrant attempted a desperation 3-point shot from his knees with six seconds to go. The referees ruled the shot never hit the rim although it appeared that it did and it also look like a goaltending call could have been made. The referees never looked at a replay of the shot.

Kendall Timmons scored 13 points for Tulane but went out of the game in the first half with an ankle injury and never returned to the game. To pick up the slack, Jordan Callahan finished the game with 17 points and Ricky Tarrant had 16. Tulane is now 0-2 in conference play and 12-4 overall.

Southern Miss (14-2, 2-0) was led by point guard Neil Watson who came off the bench to score 16 points and dish out 5 assists. Forward Maurice Bolden chipped in with 15 points for the Golden Eagles.
