CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament

Postby BYUfan1 » Tue Mar 15, 2011 12:27 am

The CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament wasted no time getting started as the Buffalo Bulls defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats 75-68 Monday night. The victory marked Buffalo's first postseason win ever on the road and just its second overall. The Bulls led at intermission 33-29 in a half that was marked by neither team looking that interested in playing the game. Neither team shot well from the field in the game as the Bulls shot 40.3% and the Bobcats 36.8%.

Guard Zach Filzen scored 17 points for the Bulls and Dave Barnett added 15 points and 7 rebounds. Forward Mitchell Watt had 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals in the victory for Buffalo. Senior guard Deontay Twyman tallied 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 10 assists for the Bobcats. Also for Quinnipiac, James Johnson shot 5-of-8 from 3-point range in a 17-point effort.

Cooper finished the game with 10 points and 9 assists. DeVaughn Washington chipped in with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Reserve Reggie Keely gave the Bobcats a huge boost by tallying 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Senior Tirrell Baines had 18 points and 7 rebounds for Marshall.

The Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors used a balanced attack and strong defense to defeat the Portland Pilots 76-64 in the first round of the CIT. Hawai'i opened up a 38-32 halftime lead by going on a 8-0 run in the first 3 minutes of the second half. Portland shot a little over 41% from the 3-point line for the season, but shot just 8-of-26 (31%) in the game. Zane Johnson scored most of his 19 points in the first half but still led four players in double figures. While Johnson starred in the first half, Jeremiah Ostrowski led the Rainbow Warriors in the second half. Ostrowski had difficulty at the free-throw line but finished with 17 points and 4 assists. Jared Stohl had 22 points for the Pilots.

Santa Clara-Air Foce

Postby BYUfan1 » Sat Mar 19, 2011 1:42 am

IThe first game of the second round of the CIT could have easily been called the Kevin Foster Show. The sophomore guard tied his career high of 36 points and set a Bronco record by making nine 3-pointers as Santa Clara defeated Air Force 88-75. Foster now has the West Coast Conference record for most 3's in a season with 129. Jeff Fryer of Loyola Marymount held the previous record with 126 3-pointers made.

Along with great play of Foster, the Broncos outrebounded the Falcons 41-16. Air Force only had two offensive rebounds on the night. Marc Trasolini had 19 points and 9 rebounds for Santa Clara. Michael Lyons tallied 24 points in a losing effort for the Falcons. Derek Brooks came off the bench for Air Force to score 14 points but fouled out with about ten minutes to go in the second half.

In a quarterfinal game of the CIT, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers won at home against the Ohio Bobcats 82-73. D.J. Cooper made a 3-pointer with a little of two minutes remaining in the game to put Ohio up my one 71-70. That was the first lead the Bobcats had since the score was 9-8. However, the lead did not last long as the Buccaneers then went on a 12-2 run to end the game. ETSU survived spotty free throw shooting and allowing Ohio several second-chance points to pull the game out. Justin Tubbs scored 27 points and Mike Smith added 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Buccaneers. Senior DeVaughn Washington had 21 points and 7 rebounds for the Bobcats. Cooper, the leading scorer for Ohio, struggled with just 9 points but dished out 5 assists.

In a semifinal game at San Francisco, the Santa Clara Broncos defeated the San Francisco Dons 95-91. Santa Clara is now 22-14 on the season. It is only the fifth time that the Broncos have won 22 games in a season, the first since 1983-84. The Broncos committed only 6 turnovers in the game while the Dons turned in over 12 times. Evan Roquemore scored a career-high 30 points and backcourt mate Kevin Foster contributed 27 points and 5 assists in the winner effort for Santa Clara. For the Dons, Angelo Caloiaro had 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Rashad Green scored 19 points. San Francisco ended its season at 19-15.

Final: Santa Clara At Iona

Postby BYUfan1 » Thu Mar 31, 2011 10:29 pm

The Santa Clara Broncos defeated the Iona Gaels 76-69 to win the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Iona got off to a fast start, but strong defense and rebounding brought the Broncos back. A long 3-point shot at the buzzer by Kevin Foster gave Santa Clara a 38-28 halftime lead. Iona didn't allow that basket to give Santa Clara momentum as the game was eventually tied at 40. However, the Broncos went on a 8-0 run at that point to take a lead they never lost. Iona's Mike Glover may have been the best inside player in the game. but Santa Clara won the rebound battle 50-33.

Foster won the CIT MVP and scored 16 points in the finale. Ben Dowdell chipped in with 14 points for the Broncos while Marc Trasolini accounted for 12 points. Glover had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Gaels. Sean Armand scored 14 points, and Scott Machado had 12 points.
