CFP Trivia Challenge Question Game 50

Postby Spence » Wed Jun 21, 2006 12:02 am

From Mountainman or Billybud or both,

The tied game was eliminated in Division 1-A under rules that went into effect with the 1996 regular season.

What two teams played in the last scoreless tie in D-1A college football history, before the NCAA instituted overtime to avoid ties?

There were 9 scoreless ties in the 1970s involving division I teams. How many can you guys name?

Plus, does anyone want to take on the last scoreless tie in NCAA history?

I'll venture a guess it was Oregon vs. Oregon State on November 19, 1983. I dunno why, but that just seems like the answer to me.

No, it was in 1995.

[quote="MECU"]Are you sure it was 1995 and not 1985? That same record book has Div I-AA Oct. 26, 1985â€â€

Naw, you're on the right trail. You looked in the 2000 version of the NCAA record book. Somewhere in a link near where you were, you'll find that starting in the 2002 book, the record has been corrected and the correct game is there.

One hint. NESCAC

09/18/71 Louisville at Vanderbilt
10/07/72 Columbia at Princeton
09/29/73 Long Beach State at North Texas
09/29/73 Bucknell at Columbia
xx/xx/76 ? My sources tell me there was a scoreless tie in 1976 but I can't find it.
09/10/77 Air Force at Wyoming
09/09/78 Northwestern at Illinois
10/06/79 Northern Illinois at E Michigan

Also, the NCAA statbook says there were only 8 scoreless ties in the 1970s. I looked through 70, 74 & 75 and didn't see any those years.

Since division I includes division-IAA, I felt obliged to mention the one that occured there.

That tie in 1976 was between a division I and division III team.

TCU vs. Air Force, 1958?

And I don't like your sig kttfan!
OK, so I wasn't in the ballpark, but how often do scoreless ties happen, anyway?
I thought this question was 'limited' to I-A, not when ever any two teams play, so I might have been in the ballpark.
Unless I'm mistaken I think there was another 'major' bowl game that ended in a scoreless tie (besides TCU & Air Force). Anyone want to take a crack at it?

For the record, the scoreless tie in 1976 was Davidson vs. division III Randolph-Macon.

In 1979, I-AA Bucknell tied I-AA Lafayette 0-0.

[quote="MECU"]Actually, that question wasn't limited to I-A. And scoreless ties...
And in bowl games there were 4:

The answer submitted was Oregon -Oregon St. This question was limited to D-1A.

I could have made a mistake on who submitted it, if I did I apolgize.
