Oi. From what I understand, "Teachers" was a pretty common nickname or at least school name.

Is it east of the Mississippi?

Or am I getting my games confused?

No, unless there is more then one. Eric didn't give me a source and i'm flying blind.

It is east of the Mississippi.

Farther east and a little south. That is all the hints. Since it appears there were more then one school with the nickname "Teachers", I decided to narrow Eric's question a little. After this it is up to Eric whether or not to leave another hint.

There was seriously more than one team with the name "Teachers"? That's suprising. Anyway, my source is always the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia.

From what I've read so far, it is neither Kent State (Silver Foxes), Texas Tech (Matadors), nor Kansas (Jayhawks ever since football began). If there are indeed one more, or these teams above had at one point in time, that'll be acceptable.

I believe Northern Iowa was originally the teachers. I have narrowed the search so that should limit the choices.

I don't know if the team nickname was teachers, but a lot of school used to be "Teacher" or "Normal".

As spence pointed out, Northern Iowa was one, they were "Iowa Teachers". West Texas A&M used to be West Texas State Teachers. Central Arkansas used to be Arkansas State Teachers. Southeastern oklahoma used to be Oklahoma State Teachers. There's was a Kansas Teachers, North Dakota State Teachers, Condordia was Condordia Teachers, St. Thomas in Iowas Was Iowa State Teachers. Southeast Missouri used to be Cape Girardeau Teachers, Emporia State used to be Kansas State Teachers.

I hadn't realized that most of them were not I-A. I've not come across any references to it at the I-A level.

Memphis

That works. I originally had East Carolina, but I looked up Memphis in the book, and sure enough, they were the Teachers and Tutors at one point in time.

I seem to learn something new everyday on here. I had never heard of Teachers as such a common team name.

The reference to Memphis I saw was that it was the actual team name. The names I gave earlier were mostly school names. Since I have to dig into so much historical information, I get a ton of alternate names for schools. "Teachers" and "Normal" are two of the common ones which make it hard to figure out what teams are which if you don't note it. Who knows off-hand what school "Iowa State Teachers" is?

I doubt it was the official mascot. Teachers and tutors? Now, all we need are the notebooks, and we'll be set! (don't forget the textbooks).
Although in elementary school we were the 'rulers' we weren't talking about the measuring device. I voted for 'Sting Rays' got shot down, like an incoming thermonuclear device!
