NFL's Making Me Mad

Postby Eric » Mon Jan 30, 2006 11:28 pm

Anybody else here about this? Starting this season, the NFL Network will be showing 8 Thursday and Saturday night games for the second half of the season.

#1: The NFL Network reaches 40 million homes, as told on ESPN.
#2: Anybody notice that THURSDAY and SATURDAY nights are college football nigths?

The NFL's ticking me off because they are totally disregarding college football. They play their January 1st games instead of college football, which is understandable, still not really happy about it. Then you show NFL games on COLLEGE FOOTBALL nights. Then you steal the "12th Man" tradition (Seattle Seahawks). At least give tradition a little recognition.

I only watch the NFL to follow former buckeye's careers. I don't have a team I follow.

The second half of the season would start after the CFB season is over, which is probably why ESPN is doing it. They are looking to draw some of the college fans over to the dark side.

The NFL Network starts broadcasting on Thanksgiving, so it will indeed run into the regular season.

Yes, but most of the championship games are during the day, I don't think it will cause much disruption to the college game. I get your point though.

Another one of those goose and gander deals. ESPN started it when they televised college games on Friday nights ..... that's high school football territory.

The TV guys are going to go after market share, which means dollars. They don't care anything about tradition. The fans and the schools are to only ones that matters too. I've been preaching the conflict of interest stuff and about the 'powerful forces' that college football is subject too for some time. Don't mean to be saying I told you so, but those forces are out there and it's all about money to them, they don't give a hoot about the game, tradition or anything else ....... except their profits.

It has always been about money. The question is to what degree the presidents are willing to sell their soul. ESPN isn't good for CFB IMO. They are the ones pushing the hardest for a playoff. Playoffs mean more money for them, less for the schools. Less games, smaller total payouts. I hope they never get to turn the championship game into a Super bowl type game.

Well, I suppose then that we are about to find out if college football is for sale. Looks like the presidents have taken a stand and the NCAA is telling all programs to be cautious about over commercialism.

It will be so important to get good and appropriate leadership in the decision making positions.

We'll see.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think Miles Brand is good for the NCAA. He is making the schools accountable while not completely selling out to TV.

I also think the presidents have to listen to the alumni and that will keep them from temptation. When SBC made a deal to sponsor the Ohio State-Michigan game the alumni from both schools got together and had a monster hissy fit. Both schools decided later that it wasn't in the best interest of the game to have them sponsor it. Tradition is upheld by the alumni, hopefully they will always be there to squash things like that.

I think ESPN does a great job broadcasting college football, it's just when the analysts tell me how much better a playoff would be it makes me cringe! I hate that idea. What a great way to ruin college football. The only reason why it seperates itself from the rest of the sporting world is it's uniqueness about how it settles a championship and the way the postseason is set up. It actually gives you the number 1 and number 2 instead of the 5 seed vs. the 3 seed. I think in other sports, there should be a playoff, but I like college football the way it is.

Everyone says what they think is the best format for a playoff. Everyone says the NFL has it right with the wild card round, but I really think it depends on what sport you're talking about. For example, I think for the NHL and NBA, 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, etc is the right way to do it. For the MLB, 1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3 is the best way, because the better team normally wins in a long series, the chance for a 8 seed to beat a 1 seed in a series is unlikely. And for college football, 1 vs. 2 is the way to go. The 2 best teams over the course of the season, I mean, that's what the season is meant for right?

Well, the way I see it as of today. The NCAA and the college presidents have weathered a powerful storm.

There will be others, so don't put away the umbrellas and storm gear just yet.

*************************************************************
EDIT:

By the way, just to clairify, the storm I'm referring too is the media, both print and television.

By weathering the storm I mean, the Associated Press(sportswriters) was booted from voting in the BCS and the TV guys were told by the presidents in no uncertain terms ther would be no playoffs in Division 1 college football.

The thing most people don't think about when advocating a playoff is that these kids don't get paid to do this. They are asking them to put their bodys on the line for 4 more games every year. Risking their future earning potential.

We harp on the polls and I am as bad about it as anyone else, but it really doesn't matter. There really is no such thing as a national champion. There has never been a national champion in CFB because the NCAA doesn't sanction a national championship. Having a MNC just gives us something to argue about.

I have a question.
How do these people get these jobs.
Do the coaches vote on them or do they declare themself to It.

We as fans should have a right to say who gets to submitt a vote,or the coaches do.
Spellcheck stoped working so I hope there are not to many misspelled words here
