Taggart's the Man

Postby billybud » Sun Feb 04, 2018 9:07 am

Willie Taggart is in unprecedented territory in recruiting comebacks.

FSU was ranked in the 70's in the 2018 recruiting classes in December when Taggart took cpmmand.

FSU will now likely finish as high as #15....That kind of movement, according to National Rivals Recruiting Director, Mike Farrell, is unprecedented.

FSU moved this past week all the way up to #16...from the 70's to #16....Willie is the man.

Especially when it seems the old coach made every effort to screw Florida State on his way out the door.

He may be Florida State's man, but not sure he left Oregon any better than Jimbo left FSU.

As the article says...Taggart followed a path blazed by Saben....

It's a business...but Taggart and Jimbo have the same agent...Sexton..who is known for shopping his guy and then green mailing the institution to keep him...FSU got tired of the act and let Jimbo hit the road.

Sexton is a very, very good agent...Besides Saban at Bama...Sexton represents another 10 SEC coaches for a total of 11 of 14 SEC coaches.

The Orlando Sentinel thinks Sexton is a super agent:

"Well, this year nobody has accomplished a more extraordinary deed than Jimmy Sexton, the incomparable sports agent who represents former FSU coach Jimbo Fisher and new FSU coach Willie Taggart. Just consider for a moment the strings Sexton pulled and the money he made for two coaches who both had losing conference records this year.

Sexton somehow parlayed the Seminoles’ worst season in nearly four decades into the richest contract in college football history (10 years, $75 million from Texas A&M) for Fisher, who went 5-6 before bailing out in Tallahassee. If that weren’t miraculous enough, Sexton simultaneously convinced FSU to nearly double Taggart’s salary to $5 million a year after he spent a single season at Oregon, where he went 7-5 (4-5 in the Pac-12 and 0-3 against ranked teams).

OK...FSU ended up #9 (Rivals)...from outside of #70 in December....A heck of a comeback in a fast and furious month or so.

Oregon was 15, which has to be attributed to Taggart and the WOW factor when recruits see the facilities...
Washington was 14 which has to be attributed to winning.

...and because I know you are all clamoring to found out, Boise State was 55...

Recruiting rankings are kind of a self fulfilling prophesy. The guys who rank the players rank them based on who offers them. So it only makes sense that the teams at the top are those same teams.

Today..is not like the past...these kids have film from the 8th grade...have been scouted for years...and are known nationally, not just locally or regionally like 30 years ago.

Many play on 7 v 7 teams that are heavily scouted at the tournaments....college teams have up to 30 staff, many of whom watch cut ups of HS film.

True..if an Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State or FSU offers...others will too based on their knowledge that these schools have scouted the kid.

At a school like Alabama, beside all of the coaches and strength coaches..you have..

Director of Player Personnel
Associate Director Recruiting Operations
Director Football Recruitment
Athletic Relations Coordinator
Football Analysts (Five of them)
Director of Player Development (two)

These guys work year round on identifying recruits, building relationships with high school coaches and their athletes.

I agree with Spence but what Mr. Billybud says is correct. The fact is this has been the case for many years.

Large schools have always had a recruiting budget. Kids, (Parents) write to schools early in their life, most I suspect when they are in High School, and say to the school they are interested in playing at the school and attending college. (The are companies that parents can pay to get kids on the school's watch list. There are almost as many recruiting services as colleges...look them up.)

Large schools have kids clamoring to attend, the schools don't have to seek out, just sort out.

Not so much with smaller schools, less budget, fewer dedicated staff, etc. Think of all the divisions and junior colleges. So they in between games get in their cars and drive the area meeting with HS coaches and families.

I do have a point. This is why the large budgeted schools should form their own division. Base it on Budget...$ are always the end marker anyway. Get the top 40 teams and let them do whatever they want, no rules, no guidelines. That eliminates corruption by definition, allows them to pay athletes, whatever they want.

Then the rest can go back to regional football with the schools in charge. The money level will be the guideline there also. So schools like Boise State that think they are something they are not can play like schools that also live in LaLa Land.

***In every state I know High Schools have done this with school size. (I get HS kids can not jump borders where colleges that is not an issue, the point is, they figured it out fairly simply. As more High Schools are defunding athletic programs, that may change. Always "follow the money."
