What's A Name Worth ..?

Postby Cane from the Bend » Mon May 22, 2017 7:13 pm

.

For USC apparently $70 million.

The University of Southern Cal is selling the naming rights of L.A. Memorial Coliseum to United Airlines for more than $70M over 15 years, making it the richest naming-rights deal among college football stadiums.

At $4.7M per year, United’s deal will surpass the 10-year, $41M deal Alaska Airlines signed with the Univ. of Washington for Husky Stadium naming rights in '15. Fox Sports, through its partnership with USC, has been attempting to sell naming rights to one of the nation’s most recognizable venues since '15.

How United’s brand name will be attached is not clear, but school and Fox officials in the past have said “Memorial Coliseum” would be retained in the name.

School officials have said, the revenue from a naming-rights deal is expected to help offset costs of the $270M renovation to the Coliseum. The renovation is supposed to be completed in time for the '19 football season.

The contract, itself, has not yet been signed, but an agreement is in place. While Fox takes the lead on the sale, USC and Fox have been working in tandem to identify corporate candidates for a naming-rights deal.

One of the reasons United emerged is because the airline's CEO, Oscar Munoz, is a graduate of the USC business school. L.A. Int’l Airport is one of United’s U.S. hubs.

Washington did it, now USC ... so, when is Autzen Stadium going to become "Nike Autzen-Knight Memorial Stadium" . . ?

I still prefer the name of the stadium that Miami plays in...the Hard Rock...

Do the Canes get any moola at all from that naming?

Miami's stadium (Hurricanes and Dolphins) is like a hot sheet motel....short term rentals.

Since it was Joe Robbie Stadium, it has been Pro Players Stadium, Land Shark Stadium, Sun Life Stadium, and Hard Rock Stadium...

The Short Answer ... No.

All Sponsored naming rights revenue, will go to stadium owner Stephen Ross.

It will cost Hard Rock International $250 million [$13.8 million per year] in exchange for an 18-year naming rights deal with the stadium.

A favorite for nickname of the new stadium is "The Rock," short for "Hard Rock Stadium" and a reference to Miami's own (movie star) Dwayne Johnson former Hurricanes Defensive Tackle and professional wrestler. Which, whether it becomes the official stadium nickname or not, it will likely become the associated moniker of the site.

On the long end ...

The money from this deal is geared to offset a privately funded $350 million renovation price tag which project began in January 2015, that was a design of preservation of self interest, when the nfl threatened to pull Miami as a potential venue for future Super Bowls, unless there where changes made to the stadium, protecting the attending fans from the elements --- Stadium upgrades that were included --- video boards in each corner of the stadium, additional suites, and an open-air canopy over the main seating areas [all attending audience seating have fully overhead coverage]. Though, seeming anti-intuitive to many, as part of the renovation, the stadium's seating capacity was reduced from 75,000 to 65,000 seats.
Personal seat licenses are not being used, and a preview center opened at the stadium in February 2015 to help current and prospective season ticket holders select their ticket packages. Luxury packages being used in place of PSL revenue to help finance the stadium. 32 four-seat pods are located in the lower bowl at the south 30-yard lines, with an additional 16 pods at the south end zone. The pods feature a living room arrangement, including premium furniture and television screens that show the NFL RedZone channel and NFL programming.

In compliance with the nfl demands, the Stadium is set to host Super Bowl 54 in 2020.

And the amazing thing for [stadium owner] Ross, is that because Hard Rock International is an entertainment and hospitality company it does not preclude the possibility the Stadium can add secondary sponsors such as banks, beer, alcohol and soft drink companies and even automotive manufacturers or auto dealers --- which could see rotating secondary sponsorship, based on the venue as a draw for multiple sports & entertainment circuits --- such as Soccer, Baseball, MonsterJam [Monster Truck Series], Rock Concerts, ect...

We refer to the stadium as the Seminole Hard Rock Stadium...(after the owners of the Hard Rock chain).....also known in Tallahassee as Doak Campbell South.......

When the Canes play the Noles down there, we like to say that we have them between "The Rock" and a hard place...

Hey....everybody has a price....now I see someone hawking fake documents on the CFP.....since it has been up a week, I figure they are a sponsor.

Nice scam though....take the money and run...who is anyone going to complain to about not actually getting the illegal documents that they thought that they had purchased?

Put a nickel in the drum and you'll be saved...boom, boom!

Here's a relevant add on to this thread for; Swamp Daddy ...

The University of Louisville agreed to a 10-year, $160 million apparel deal with Adidas.

Athletic director, Tom Jurich, made mention of the agreement at a booster function Thursday night.

The deal is groundbreaking for the ACC: Louisville's deal with adidas at $16 million a year is $7 million more than any other apparel deal for an ACC school.

Nationally, only UCLA, Ohio State and Texas have more lucrative apparel contracts in college sports.

It also speaks to how far Louisville has come since it joined the ACC in 2014. --- At that time, a high-ranking college sports executive said, Louisville had "no brand."

Louisville is coming off successful seasons in its two top sports, as the men's basketball team went 25-9 reaching the Round of 32 of the NCAA tournament [a common season for the Cardinals], while the football team went 9-4 and featured Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Lamar Jackson.

Another factor which may have contributed to this reported agreement, is Adidas losing Michigan, Notre Dame, UCLA and Tennessee in recent years.

Well, whatever the reasoning, Louisville is showing that their name has a net worth.
