Chip Kelly Pt. 2

Looks like Chip Kelly is on track to get fired yet again. I don't know what the 49ers management expected him to do with this horrendous roster, but alas, he's going to be on the open market. I wonder if any college football teams will show interest. Then again, I don't know that Kelly will have any reciprocal interest on his end. He's tasted the NFL and he thinks he's cut out for the league, so maybe he stays put. I think he likes the idea of not recruiting 24/7.

Anyway, the guy will be cashing paychecks from two different NFL franchises for a couple of years into the future, so if he wants to spend some time in Hawaii or the Bahamas, then I guess that's his prerogative.

Last year, I was pushing the idea hard of Kelly going to Virginia, Virginia Tech, or Syracuse. The East needs another successful team, although I think Fuente is going to bring VT into that next level in the near future. I think Kelly could go to any mid-level BCS school like Illinois or NC State and build a contending program in a couple of seasons, and I'd like to see that. College football needs some new blood. I was giving a cursory look over some rosters next year and thinking, "so who will even be in contention for a playoff bid next year?" The only answers I'm seeing are Ohio State (again), Alabama (again), Oklahoma (again), Clemson (again), Florida State (again), Washington (again), maybe USC. You might have to throw in Louisville since Jackson is such a special athlete.

Two thoughts.

1. Kelly is an unknown. Nobody really knows him. He seems to love football played at lightning speed. That only happens at the college level, not at the Pro level. Many players are not 20 years old and playing smart does not include speed. He will stay in the NFL. There will be a team that knows he had an nothing roster and will see Kelly's razzle dazzle style as a way to bring excitement.

Ain't a darn thing wrong with college football...

The problem is with the country....those blue state socialists who want everyone to get a participation trophy...or the winners handicapped enough so that the non competitive can imagine themselves to have earned a right to be in the same ball park..

Woe is me...some folks have a step up in life...we must handicap them so that those less fortunate are less disadvantaged. The stress must be on equality not on what gets one to be competitive.

Today's football is the best it has been in my lifetime. Sure, it has evolved from a sport where a game was watched by fans in a stadium to one where millions watch on TV, and more money is thus generated and spent...but that is a good thing.

If you pine for the old days, watch Division III...you can be one of the few, the proud, the ones who don't need a television.

I have been telling this to Mrs. Donovan for years...maybe this will convince here to throw it out.

There is plenty wrong with College football because it is a reflection of society. For all the reasons you stated and more.

(If I could find it I would post a video of one of my sons with two of his daughters unceremoniously cutting up their participation ribbons. They were 6 and 10 at the time.)

Letting someone determine a winner that isn't decided on the field is the same ideology that gives out participation trophies. College football has an aristocracy that decides which teams can play for championships and which ones can not. If you can not find and objective way to get equality then let every conference winner in and see what happens. That isn't handicapping anything it is letting winner move on. That is how sports works.

I rarely watch ESPN anymore...and that is exactly why! Most of the day is spent on drivel and pompous prognostication. Report the news, report what has transpired.

I love the football...I find football players to be the least affected social "participants" of today's youth. (Who often seem to get the Galdiator exception.) I don't know if the rest have any testosterone. My 22 and 23 year old and all of their associates have various and notable life skill issues. I handled more responsibility when I was 11. They didn't get that crap from me. It sure is difficult to look upon.
